Why Engineering Plastics Are Replacing Metal Parts in UK Manufacturing

For decades, strength in manufacturing was often associated with metal. But that assumption is changing fast.
Engineering plastics, including high-performance polymers such as nylon, polycarbonate, and PEEK (polyether ether ketone), are now routinely replacing metal components across some of the UK's most demanding industries. From automotive chassis parts to aerospace fittings and construction hardware, manufacturers are discovering that modern plastics don't just match metal in performance. In many applications, they surpass it.
Here are some key drivers for why people are moving to plastic
- Weight Reduction: In an era of high fuel prices and tightening emissions targets, every kilogram counts. A 10% reduction in vehicle weight delivers a 6–8% improvement in fuel efficiency, while a 20% weight reduction on an aircraft such as the Boeing 787 can improve fuel efficiency by up to 12%. Volkswagen's crankshaft covers, once made from aluminium, are now made from polymer, achieving a 40% weight saving on that part alone.
- Corrosion Resistance: Metal corrodes. In harsh or high-moisture environments, this can lead to expensive coatings, ongoing maintenance and eventual replacement. Engineering plastics are inherently corrosion-resistant, helping to reduce cost and complexity from the outset.
- Production Efficiency: Metal parts can require hundreds of labour hours to mill, finish and assemble. Plastics are often faster to produce, cheaper to transport, and can consolidate multiple components into a single moulded part, reducing both assembly time and cost.
- Design Flexibility: Unlike many metal components, plastics can be moulded into complex geometries that would be difficult, time-consuming or prohibitively expensive to achieve through traditional metal manufacturing. This opens new possibilities in product design, integration and part consolidation.
- Material Performance: Today's engineering polymers offer excellent temperature resistance, chemical compatibility and wear resistance, making them a practical replacement for metal in selected applications such as gears, bushings, and structural components.
How Chess Plastics supports the transition from metal to plastic
At Chess Plastics, we work closely with manufacturers exploring the shift from metal to engineering plastics.
With over five decades of experience in injection moulding, we support the full journey, from material selection and design for manufacture through to tooling, production, finishing and assembly, helping businesses reduce weight, cut costs and unlock the design freedom that modern polymers offer.
If you are reviewing your component specifications or looking for a UK injection moulding partner with expertise in engineering plastics, speak to the Chess Plastics team to discuss your requirements.
