Large Injection Moulding
Chess Plastics can manufacture plastic components for a wide range of industries using our 18 large moulding machines, which range in size from 400 tonnes up to 1300 tonne lock. Large injection moulding products can be manufactured using cost-effective production methods making components from 300 mm square up to 1400 mm square.
Chess Plastics have extensive knowledge in a wide variety of thermoplastic materials, prime or recycled, filled with glass, talc, or unfilled. Using our gravimetric dosers we can also add additives such as flame retardants, anti-microbial and special colours.
Whilst we are predominantly injection moulders, we do additional services such as printing, welding, plating, assembly, and packaged to form complete units ready to despatch to the 'High Street' distributors.
Production planning and control are effectively achieved by the use of our 'Mattec' Real-Time Monitoring system, which integrates with our plastic manufacturing software.
Below is a listing of our machines, all of which use modern technology to ensure precise quality standards are met combined with 6 axis robots.

What Is Large Injection Moulding?
In the injection moulding process, the hydraulic cylinder pushes the screw forward and injects the molten plastic resin into the mould cavity with extremely high pressure. As such pressure exceeds 20,000 PSI during the injection process, the two halves of the mould are pushed apart.
Large injection moulding machinery is rated according to the “clamping force” of the tonnage. The tonnage is the force used to clamp the two halves of the mould together.
The greater the surface area of the moulded component, the more tonnage required. Usually, “large tonnage” machines are machines with a rated clamping force of 500 tonnes or more. Thanks to the introduction of our 21 large injection moulding machines, our units can produce between 500 and 1300 tonne locks.
Moreover, the injection pressure of large injection moulding machines is a measure of the PSI needed to inject molten plastic resin to replace air and fill the cavity under sufficient pressure to form a high-quality part.
The fixture on the injection moulding machine locks the two halves of the mould together in the injection process, as well as packing and cooling in the manufacturing of the plastic component.
More clamping force is required to hold the mould together whenever the injection pressure needed to push the plastic into the mould cavity is greater.
What Are Some Benefits of Large Injection Moulding?
Thanks to our large injection moulding machines, we can effectively produce a high volume of components every hour up to 1200mm x 1200mm in size. Our machines operate at a high level to ensure optimal performance. As such, we can accommodate a greater number of clients while fulfilling their needs.
Furthermore, this injection moulding service allows us to create large-scale components at a reduced cost. This is essential for our clients, as it ensures that they can get the parts they need quickly while saving money.
We also have greater versatility in the designs of our moulds, thus adding greater convenience to our clientele. With the addition of colours, materials, and features, Chess Plastics is able to meet a wide range of needs across numerous industries.
